Sting is a multi-time champion and is widely considered one of the greatest wrestlers of all time. He has had a long and successful career in the industry. The Icon is best known for his time with World Championship Wrestling (WCW) and Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA). Sting also had runs in the other two major promotions in the United States in the modern era, WWE and AEW.
‘The Icon,’ Sting, whose real name is Steve Bordon, was born in Omaha, Nebraska, on March 20th, 1959. He began his wrestling career in 1985, working for various independent promotions before joining WCW in 1986. He quickly became one of the top stars in the company, winning multiple championships and becoming a fan favorite. In the late 80s and early 90s, Sting was one of the top faces of WCW, regularly headlining pay-per-views and TV shows. He won his first WCW World Heavyweight Championship in 1990.
Sting’s WCW career came to an end when Vince McMahon bought the rival company in 2001. After a couple of years, Sting signed with TNA, where he continued to be a major player. He was a multiple-time NWA and TNA World Heavyweight Champion, and TNA World Tag Team Champion. Sting would eventually make his WWE debut at Survivor Series 2014. Although his first match would come months later at WrestleMania 31 against Triple H, which he lost. Unfortunately, Sting was forced to announce his retirement from WWE following a serious neck injury. This did not last long, as the icon returned to the ring in AEW. He formed an alliance with Darby Allin and had occasional high-profile tag team matches at PPVs.

There are very few tag teams in which both wrestlers grow out to be main event stars as well. Sting and Ultimate Warrior are an example of such tag teams. The two once-in-a-generation wrestlers started their careers together as a team. The Stinger and Warrior went by the names Flash and Rock in the Universal Wrestling Federation. As soon as he joined WCW, Flash became “Surfer Sting.” The fans could see similarities between Sting and the Ultimate Warrior with their almost identical face paint. They both ran parallel in two of the biggest wrestling promotions of all time, never to meet again in the squared circle.
Eventually, Sting became more dark and serious in WCW, carrying a baseball bat to the ring. This new character was inspired by the 1994 film “The Crow.” This is the same persona that made Sting popular, and he ran with it for many years to come. In 1996, Sting was a key player in the “New World Order” storyline. He would go on to have memorable feuds and matches with wrestlers such as Ric Flair, Hollywood Hulk Hogan, Lex Luger, and DDP.
Sting’s contributions to the wrestling industry have been recognized with multiple Hall of Fame inductions. This included the inductions into the TNA Hall of Fame in 2012 and the WWE Hall of Fame in 2016. Sting’s career spanned several decades, and he has had a huge impact on the wrestling industry. He has been a role model for many wrestlers who followed in his footsteps, and his legacy will continue to be remembered for generations to come.
