Rams HC Sean McVay breaks silence on Puka Nacuas injury which forced him to leave teams practi

Last Sunday, the Los Angeles Rams saw a crisis at hand when their star wide receiver, Puka Nacua, sustained an injury to his right knee, making his presence in the starting few weeks of the 2024 regular season questionable. Amid the growing speculation and concerns for him, head coach Sean McVay finally gave an assuring update on the injury.

On August 4, the Rams held a joint practice with the Los Angeles Chargers, where Nacua hurt his knee while catching a touchdown but didn’t feel the pain until he ran a route later in the practice. Although he had to leave Sunday’s practice, McVay assured fans that the injury was not serious, and it most definitely wouldn’t affect his availability in the regular season.

Yeah, he got his knee banged up. Really just had a little bit of a bursa sac, kind of burst it. And it's just going to be week-to-week with him. Nothing serious, nothing structurally. He'll be in good shape, and he'll recover and we'll be ready to go; no threat of anything for Detroit.

The Rams wide receiver is coming off a remarkable rookie season by logging 1,486 receiving yards and 105 catches. His injury during the training camp initially became a major concern for the team, especially since three-fifths of their offensive line is already on the injury list. But since McVay assured that Nacua’s injury wasn’t severe, both the team and fans breathed a sigh of relief.

Puka Nacua overcoming injuries from college to the NFL

Although it’s only been one year since Nacua joined the NFL, he already has a long list of injuries. Back in 2019, the wide receiver had to miss the final five games of the season while playing from Washington due to a pedal foot fracture. Then in 2022, he was forced to miss two games after suffering an ankle sprain against the UFC.

Again in 2023, while preparing for the Senior Bowl, Nacua suffered a concussion during practice and missed the game. The injury saga continued in the NFL when he sustained a rib sprain in December during a match against the Cleveland Browns. Fortunately, it wasn’t serious, and he returned to the field after halftime.

Circling back to his recent injury at the practice session, the Rams have decided to monitor his recovery on a weekly basis, but so far, Nacua appears to be in good shape and ready to dominate in Week 1 of 2024.
